Selecting Backup Settings
You use the options on the Advanced Backup Settings tab to:
- Specify the local folder to store backup files.
-
Specify a secondary network location to which to copy nightly backup files for additional security (for example, an external USB drive or another computer on the network).
Note:
-
Retention options do not apply to secondary backup locations.
-
You receive no notification if the main backup is successful, but the backup to the additional location fails.
-
-
Specify a retention plan for local "on demand" backup files.
-
Specify one or more email address to notify administrators if an unattended (nightly) backup is not successful.
Important! The settings you choose on this tab apply to all the databases in the SQL Server instance, not just to one company.
To specify advanced settings for On Demand backups:
- Click Advanced Settings > Advanced Backup Settings.
-
In the Set local backup folder box, type the path and name of the folder on the server machine where you want to store backup files, or browse to the folder.
When you browse to a location, you can create a new folder, if one does not already exist.
-
(Optional) If you want to copy your nightly backup files to a secondary location on your network or to a USB drive attached to your computer, specify the path and name of the folder in the Copy nightly backup files to this additional location box.
- For each type of "on demand" backup, specify the number of days to retain back files.
-
Click [Save Changes].
When you save your changes, Database Administration sets the permissions on the backup folder. That is, only administrator users have access to the folder.
Permissions are not modified for the secondary backup location.
